I follow this tumblr called wears heart on sleeve. If you don't know what a tumblr is, that's ok: I have one, but I have NO idea really how to use it (kind of like my Twitter account, but that's a different story for a different day). But I do follow this one on my Google Reader. Basically, this user compiles all of these images and quotes throughout the day about love, and sometimes she interjects her personal feelings about romance in there, too. But I just wanted to share a few images that I've found the past few days. It seems like it's been FLOODED with images recently instead of quotes, and I love it.

Other things that have caught my eye recently:
*This Flickr photographer. Her work is ethereal and eye-catching, but so down to earth and relatable at the same time. I especially love the heart music notes and the fruit snack people.
*decor8 seems to have lots of photos of fun and quirky decorations for the home. Some of these look perfect for a college student's room. I especially love the heart newspaper garland.

Style

For the longest time, I wrestled with this question. It would always come up, again and again when I displayed my work. People would comment, "Oh man, I love your style!" or "I wish I could have your style!" or "Can you teach me how to work in your style?" And to be honest, I used to try. I used to try to explain my working processes and my thoughts on how to do design to people, but no matter how hard they tried, they never were able to achieve what they thought looked like a piece done in "my" style.

But the harder I tried to explain, the more I felt like I didn't really have a style. I've never classified myself, or given myself a certain title, such as "photojournalist" or "collagist" or "portrait photographer" and the like because I don't feel like I fall into any of these categories. Or do I?

And what exactly defines style? Is it the post-processing done on a photo, the actions I use in PS? Or is it the way the photograph is taken from the get-go, before it ever even leaves the camera?

I've recently run across a couple of professors who PERFECTLY articulated the answer to these dilemmas for me. The first was a visiting professor from Earlham College whose photo show just opened up in one of the galleries on campus. During an open discussion with the viewers in the gallery, one student asked how he developed his unique style. He chuckled slightly, and said something to the effect of this:
"Style? You see style in these? Because I see a lack of style. How do these photos even relate to each other? One is a close perspective, the other is far away. One is a tree stump, the other is a man-made object. Does that mean I don't have a continuity of style? And what is style to you? Does it really matter in the end, as long as your photograph is drawing the viewer in? It takes a fresh pair of eyes to see that all of these photos have some type of style and cohesiveness, because I just shoot what I like and what I'm drawn to. I don't try to fit into something so defined as 'style.'"

The second professor is my Visual Communications (Graphic Design) professor. She's all about getting us to learn the process behind creativity, the process of design. She loves hand skills, and doesn't really care for the computer. Give her a Xerox machine over a printer any day. But she constantly beats into our heads that, if you open up and let go, YOU will naturally show in your piece.

So does this mean that I AM my own style?

I finally feel that I've put the pieces together. My "style" is just me. It's how I see things, how I relate to the world, what draws me in. It's slightly ADD: I'm often attracted to the sparkly thing on the newly engaged woman's finger more so than I am their surroundings, or the spark of love in the couple's eyes or the glow in their cheeks that speaks of true passion and love. And I use whatever angle, whatever process it takes to recreate that for me. I love contrast, and I find beauty in the old and decayed, but also in the new and perfect. I strive to let myself show through in my pieces. That is MY STYLE, and no one can ever hope to copy it.

We idolize and adore and look up to certain creative professionals in our fields. I know in mine, it's people like Stefan Sagmeister. Their work is constantly flashed before us as an example of the "perfect design" for this or the "perfect concept" for that. But in reality, although I can emulate their design, I can never truly design like them because I'm not them. I don't think like them, I don't have the same experiences as them. I'm never going to be truly satisfied with a piece if it doesn't scream "ME!" loud and clear. And with photos, I'm never going to be truly satisfied unless I'm able to capture the feeling that I have at the moment I click that shutter. Post-processing and actions are just a means to helping me achieve this; they don't create "me."

So from now on, instead of trying to define your "style," I challenge you just to work and think and feel your way through whatever it is you're creating. Eventually, you may start to see patterns in your work, and perhaps you should explore those avenues for a while and see where they go. But don't be afraid to always be recreating yourself and let yourself go down a different "style" road some day. You just may like the adventure.

Man, that's how I've been feeling all week. I've just been so...... weak and restless and apathetic about everything. I feel like I can't concentrate on anything or keep focus on one thing long enough to see it through to completion. The only thing I was truly able to accomplish was to get all of my photos printed in the darkroom for my Critique that was yesterday. That was a 7-hour marathon in the darkroom on Tuesday, and that's when all motivation and energy started going downhill. Unfortunately, I'll have to make up for it this weekend. :/ Boo.

But I did manage to scan in a couple of the photos for this assignment before I turned them in. I never know if she's going to keep photos to display outside the photo room, so I always try to scan in the good ones before they disappear for the semester. So I hope you enjoy them!

The assignment was to take candid photos (no posing of people or objects) that reflect what it's like to live right here, right now, September-October 2009. I chose to do the football game, and I explored what it really means to be a BSU football fan.

Man, it's been a very, VERY long few weeks. But the good news is that school is almost over! Although, I still have a lot, A LOT to get done in two weeks! YIKES!

Here are a few pictures taken from today. That's really about all that I can muster. I have more pictures to share of the painting studio. I'll try to assemble that into a coherent post very soon. I'm too sick and miserable to attempt much more than some Polaroids tonight.

Stefan Sagemeister: Designer

This is one of my favorite graphic designers of all time. It's also ironic because I have to research him and do a project about him. :)

I would suggest plugging in headphones to listen to this one. His accent makes him a little hard to understand, and any background noise whatsoever doesn't help. But his stuff is very inspirational and worth the inconvenience.

I'm really having trouble getting myself up and motivated to go to class. Ugh. It's not that today will be a bad day; in fact, we probably won't be doing much at all in my one class. Maybe that's why I'm having issues. Ah well.

Also having sleep problems, which possibly contributes to all of this, too. So here's a sleep-themed selfie. Maybe it'll inspire me to sleep better. Ha.

The first studio tour is of the Lithography/Serigraphy studio. I am taking this class right now, and I love, love, LOVE it. I see all of these wonderful, gorgeous screen printed/silkscreened prints all over Etsy, and now I know how they do it!

First things first: you need a screen...

... and a base.

The screen goes on the base. It's what you push the ink through to create the print on your paper that is under the screen. The ink is water-based, so it's a lot like acrylic paint. It dries super-fast, and all of the colors are really opaque, which means that if I print white on top of, say, dark blue, it will still pretty much show up white with very little color showing through. It does NOT, however, wash out of your clothes. :( Bad news bears.

And speaking of ink... ahhh. This is color inspiration overload!

Here's a close-up of a done print. You can really see all the layers of color on this one.

Then, after you've completely finished the print, you have to wash out the screen with a pressure washer. It's loud, and I always use the noise blockers over my ears. I don't want to go deaf!

Surprisingly, there is a lot of time spent on the computer for this class. I choose to make my designs in Photoshop/Illustrator, and then I have to separate out each individual color before I make black and white prints to take to my screen. When I first signed up for this class, I didn't think I'd really be able to use my computer at all, but it has been my trusty sidekick. Not that I mind too much: I am a designer, after all. :P

Time for a new self-portrait series!

Many people ask me what my life is like as an art major. Am I in class all the time? How much time do I really spend in the studio? What kind of projects do I have/get to do? What do the studios look like? Are the people friendly? And on and on. There just seems to be a huge curiosity as to what an art major's life is like. This week, I'll be shooting pictures of that to give everyone a glimpse. I meant to start this yesterday, but got off to a rocky start. HOWEVER, it is a NEW DAY, and I'm very excited to give you all a peek into my (not-so-fabulous-all-of-the-time) life. :)

So, I was insprired tonight. I'm back at school, and I thought I was going to get to spend the evening with the boy. But apparently, that wasn't meant to be. So I created! This is the first time that I have ever done a page or layout or decoration in this style before, and I really love the way it turned out. The four leaf clovers are made out of waxed paper with melted crayon in the middle, and then the background speckled craft paper was made COMPLETELY by accident when I was ironing the wax paper for the clovers! I loved it, and I was really inspired by it and decided I needed to do something with it besides throw it out. I might use this technique for more things later!

I also have a few things up my sleeve for some awesome appliqué, and I can't wait to get started on that! Of course pictures will come later. However, this week is going to be devoted to a painting homework assignment that I can't put off any longer. :(

So I've been working very intensely on my first homework assignment for painting this past week. Like, literally... I've been in the studio nearly every night since Monday the 2nd trying to get this painting done. It's not due until next Monday, but I have a really, REALLY busy weekend starting tomorrow and no time to finish it, so it had to be done TONIGHT. And.....

TA-DA! IT IS FINISHED!

Sorry for the weird angle, but you get the point.

I've also started to get back into the crafty mood! My art classes sap a lot of creative energy out of me, and so by the time I get back to my room from finishing projects in the studios, I don't feel like doing anything else.
But I made these Warm Fuzzies over the weekend. :) I leave you with some pics of the ones that I made. They were made for a few of my sisters in SAI. The story of Warm Fuzzies is a story we pass on around the Chapter, and it helps to remind each other that we're thinking about each other by passing on these Warm Fuzzies. Like my awesome friend Elaine has said many times (and I totally agree)...... I love Valentine's Day. I love pink, and pink is definitely a very BIG color for Valentine's! HOORAY!
The Internet is absolutely SWARMING with awesome Valentine's craft ideas, but this is my favorite one so far. I found it on Martha Stewart. Check it out because it's sweet and easy, and a lot cheaper than stained glass!

A time for weeping and sorrow

A couple or so weeks ago, on one of the blogs that I follow, I was introduced to this gorgeous baby girl.

Her name is Cora, and she was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer just two weeks ago.
I read all the entries and checked every day and became really involved with Cora and her family's story. Through all of the ups and downs, they remained so faithful. What a great testimony.

Cora passed away this morning.

Heartbroken doesn't even begin to cover it. No, I don't know this family personally, but my heart and prayers go out to them now. I can't even imagine what it must be like to be in their shoes.
But their unfailing faith is so very inspirational, and there are thousands, THOUSANDS of people lifting them up in prayer tonight. THAT is AMAZING, and it's the way that we as a body of believers should be.

So, for my Psych100 project... I made a book. :) It's a Japanese folding style book, and I took pictures to put in them. I ended up just mounting the pictures on black cardstock and then putting them in the book that way, although the original idea was to use a transfer pen and transfer the pictures directly into the book. HOWEVER, transfer pens only work with one kind of printer, and the printer I was going to use...... ran out of ink. GRRRR. But I think it turned out alright. My project was about depression, so I took objects that I found that were "out of place," such as a sock found in a parking lot. I did this to go with the feeling that people with depression sometimes feel out of place in society or among their social circles.

It's been way too incredibly long since I last posted anything.
I did, in fact, finish my Week in the Life project, although I only did 5 days instead of 7. Perhaps I will try it again soon, doing all 7 days, but this time I only got 5! I will *hopefully* be posting Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday's photos tonight. And then hopefully this weekend, I'll get to start scrapping them! I even bought a pretty new pink album. Thank you, Inspiration. :0)

Although, I DO have to write an entire Psych paper tonight. Oh, good 'ole procrastination...

Horridly, awfully bored

So, my school has decided that, in order to graduate with a Bachelor's degree, you have to take what are called "Core classes." Most other schools called them Gen Ed classes, so in that respect, my school is not unique.
HOWEVER, my school has decided that you have to take 60-some-odd hours worth of Gen Eds. It is RIDICULOUS. The average student at my school graduates in six years instead of four because there are so many of these stupid classes that we have to take.
And I'm sitting in one now. Sociology 100. And I HAAAAATE it.

So, I figured I should ramble some in here.

As to what happened yesterday...
Starting last Thursday, my dog became very, very sick. My parents took her to the animal hospital where she spent the night. That next morning, she was doing remarkably better, so they sent her home that day with some meds. However, that night, I guess she was just crying and crying and crying in pain. You couldn't even pet her or she would whine, and she didn't sleep more than 2 hours that night because she just couldn't get comfortable. My parents took her back to the hospital the next day, where the vet proceeded to tell us that the prognosis was not good at all. They basically told my parents that they needed to decide whether or not to put her down by Monday morning. They came and visited me Saturday night, and we talked together about what to do since she's my dog.
Well, I guess she's doing much, much better again this morning. However, that's exactly what happened last time, so they decided to run a few more tests.
As of right now, we're just in a holding pattern until they figure out what's going on. I'm on pins and needles, but at least I'm not crying hysterically like I was this past Saturday. My poor boyfriend didn't even know what to do with me because I just kept crying and crying.
So, we'll see. I haven't gotten a bad phone call yet this afternoon.

So a little about me. I've tried and failed many, many times at this blog thing. But I'm going to give it another shot on this one. This will just be my ramblings... no big deal. I'll share pics and stories, etc., from my days. Life as a student is always zany and crazy, right? :0) That's what I'm banking on, anyway.
So, it's been an awful weekend. I mean, awful, never-have-I-ever had a weekend as bad as this one since I've been at school. I'm hoping this situation gets better tomorrow, but it looks pretty bleak. Perhaps more details tomorrow.

Right now, I'm really inspired by this photo. Because of the no-good, awfully-bad weekend, I think the saying just really fits. I have it as my computer background for now. Hopefully it'll remind me that there really is always hope as this week goes on.
